MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The accused gunman who attempted to enter a local Jewish school last year is out of jail on a $200,000 bond.

Police say 33-year-old Joel Bowman started firing outside Margolin Hebrew Academy on July 31, 2023, after he failed to get inside while armed.

Police say Bowman then walked around the school’s exterior and made contact with a contractor who was working. After a brief interaction, Bowman allegedly pointed his gun at the contractor and fired twice.

Police say he missed, and nobody was injured. Bowman then allegedly fired another round in the school’s parking lot before leaving the scene in a red pickup truck.

Bowman is charged with carrying a gun on school property, reckless endangerment, criminal attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, and assault on a first responder.

He was released on Tuesday.
