Area of expertise

Augmented reality for health and surgery, orthopedic biomechanics, musculoskeletal quantitative medical imaging (MRI and CT), medical device development and design.

Dr. Marianne Black’s research focuses on developing assistive technology to manage musculoskeletal disorders. Dr. Black joined the faculty at UVic in September 2022 after completing her Ph.D. at Stanford University focusing on medical imaging for early osteoarthritis detection and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Stanford University’s School of Medicine on augmented reality for medical applications. Dr. Black’s research group is now working on augmented reality and eWearable approaches for guiding individuals to remotely manage musculoskeletal disorders. Dr. Black is also interested in how wearable technology can aid in athletics performance. While a graduate student, Dr. Black co-founded an orthopaedic medical device company, Arbutus Medical.
