Diane Dakers began her career as a print and broadcast journalist in 1991. She specialized in arts reporting (focusing on the news, political and business aspects of Canadian culture) and science journalism. In Victoria, she worked as an arts reporter/reviewer for the Times Colonist and as an on-air host, reporter, producer, editor and writer for CHEK-TV and The New VI (now CTV Vancouver Island).
Diane's byline has appeared in most of Canada’s major daily newspapers, along with a number of national and regional magazines. Her voice has been heard on local, national and provincial radio.
After 20 years as a journalist, Diane took a leap into the world of publishing. Since 2010, she has written 28 nonfiction books for middle grade readers. Her most recent projects focus on media literacy and investigative journalism. Diane has also published one nonfiction book for adults, CHEK Republic: A Revolution in Local Television, and three short novels for middle grade readers.
In 2012, Diane earned a Master of Journalism degree from Carleton University, adding to her Bachelor of Science degree (physical sciences) from the University of Guelph and Journalism Diploma from Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton.
She has developed and taught courses at Carleton, Royal Roads and Thompson Rivers universities.
She began her teaching career at UVic, as a sessional instructor, in Fall 2018, becoming Assistant Teaching Professor in Spring 2022.
