I joined the School of Nursing in April 2014. My teaching role focuses primarily on the theory and practice courses in the Master of Nursing Program, Nurse Practitioner (NP) option, as well as the Post Diploma Program, through on-line distance learning. I am currently the coordinator of the Nurse Practitioner program. 

Previous to joining the University of Victoria, I practiced as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner in the Adult Diabetes Care and Research Centre at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). I co-facilitated the revision of the curriculum related to diabetes and chronic disease management for Level II McMaster University nursing students and the class curriculum for patients with diabetes who attended the HHS clinic. I also co-facilitated a seminar for community nurse practitioners on the initiation and management of insulin therapy.

In addition to my experience in diabetes, I have also practiced in the fields of primary health care in a rural family health team, pediatric and adult oncology, palliative care, home care, and respite care for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. Currently I am a certified diabetes educator and maintain active NP practice in addition to my teaching requirements.

Research

My research projects to date include: Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD),  Medication Reconciliation, and Best Practice Guidelines for the Triage of New Patients with Diabetes.  While at UVIC, I had the privilege to work with a Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award (JCURA) recipient from the BScN program at the University of Victoria for the latter research project, and presented the findings at the International Diabetes Federation conference in December 2015.  I am particularly interested in the ‘lived experience’ and how this affects a patient’s overall health and wellbeing.

Teaching

I am very proud to be an NP. I believe that we possess a unique lens for integrating nursing philosophy, theory, practice, and research to advance the discipline.  The values I attach to nursing: caring, competence, holism, ethics, and leadership, are underpinned by paradigms that are most suited for the immediate encounter and are grounded in the person’s lived experience.

My approach to teaching is to encourage students to seek answers to their questions, think logically, and find the balance between problem-based learning and person-based learning.  My role as an instructor is to lead by example, offer opportunities to visualize and appreciate the lived experience, and facilitate students' competence and love of the discipline.

2012-2013 Member of the Academic Advisory Council, a collaborative outreach program through the College of Nurses of Ontario that advised the College of system and practice changes that would support nurses' ability to meet the College practice standards and contribute to regulation.

2011-2013 Member of Medication Reconciliation Steering Committee at Hamilton Health Sciences(Nurse Practitioner representative), a patient safety initiative and an Accreditation Required Organizational Practice (ROP). Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University-mentored 3rd and 4th year BScN students through the MedRec nursing research project.

2010-2011 Member of the Jurisprudence Item Writing Group, preparing and appraising exam questions that test a nursing applicant's knowledge of provincial laws, regulation and practice standards and guidelines in Ontario.
