NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Students at Tennessee State University are standing up against what they call a hostile takeover of the school.
Lawmakers are considering legislation that would vacate the university’s Board of Trustees. The state would then manage the school until a new board is in place.
The university believes this will have a negative impact on students, staff and the community.
“Our goal is to make sure we are advocating for what we feel is best for our university, which is to keep our Board of Trustees in session, so we are able to operate with our best interest in mind,” said Derrell Taylor, TSU’s Student Government Association President.
“It would be a shame to have someone govern our institution that doesn’t fully understand the history of our institution, the students and the greatness within the institution,” said Chrishonda O’quin, TSU Student Government Association Vice President.
Recently the U.S. Department of Education found TSU was underfunded by $2.1 billion. That’s the most of any historically Black college and university in the country.
