Sedona on a Budget

Budget can often dictate your choices of things to do while in Sedona. Day trips to Sedona can work well if you have limited time or budget for the full Sedona experience. The most highly recommended free (or nearly free) activity is to hike one of the many trails ranging from beginner – appropriate for families with small children – to trails challenging to even the most experienced hiker. The only cost is a Red Rock Pass, available at dozens of businesses, hotels and trailheads for $5/day or $15/week. Hikers must remember to take plenty of water, a map, and be sure to let someone know your intended route.

Families can get their wiggles out at Slide Rock State Park, a natural slide formation in Oak Creek located a few miles up Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona. Or, check out Grasshopper Point, a popular swimming hole along Oak Creek. At either spot, pleasant walks along Oak Creek provide scenic views and much appreciated shade. The cost to visit either recreation area is $8 per vehicle for up to 5 persons.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a non-denominational spiritual facility known as “the chapel in the rocks” by most visitors and definitely worth the time to experience. One of the Sacred Buddhist Stupas of Kunzang Palyul Choling is also in Sedona, Arizona, and is a quiet meditative place “Where Peace is a Living Presence.” There is no admission charge at either location but donations are accepted.

Window shopping is yet another way to enjoy time in Sedona with art galleries topping the list, and yes there are even bargains there. Check out Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, Hillside Sedona, the shops of Uptown Sedona and the outlet stores in the Village of Oak Creek.

There are tours and wine tastings at the Sedona area wineries with selections that rival the best of the vine. Longer stays will most likely require overnight lodging and there are many choices from multi-family vacation rentals to less expensive motels. Rustic cabins are another alternative for affordable lodging. Meals in Sedona run the gamut: fast food, pizza parlors, sandwich shops and family dining restaurants. Cut costs even further by stopping by the local supermarkets to buy and pack a picnic lunch, spread a blanket and enjoying the views of Sedona’s red rocks. A popular picnic spot is Crescent Moon Park near Red Rock State Park and Red Rock Crossing, the most photographed place in Sedona, with spectacular views of Cathedral Rock. Again, this recreation area costs $8 per vehicle.

Our tour to four wineries will be either in a luxury tour coach or in a luxury SUV depending on the size of the group going out that day. You may choose to enjoy tastings or bottles of award-winning wines. You will receive discounts for tastings and bottles of wine, at some of the wineries. Also, we are the only tour company that allows you to bring your own alcoholic (or nonalcoholic) beverages with you on the bus. At one of the wineries, we will have a picnic, outside next to the grapevines or inside depending on the weather. The picnic is served on linens, includes a personal charcuterie board. This includes French bread, gourmet cheeses, hard salami, olive oil with balsamic vinegar, grapes, nuts, and chocolates, for each individual person on the tour. At one of the award-winning wineries, we will be touring the production facility and barrel room. There we will discuss the wine-making process and what it takes to make a cluster of grapes into an award-winning bottle of wine.
