NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Nashville International Airport (BNA) is bracing for an extremely busy Sunday after there was heavy traffic across the entire city this weekend.

The airport is expecting more than 42,000 departures on Sunday, May 5, according to a BNA spokesperson. The all-time single-day departure record was set last October at 43,447 passengers.

To get ready for the extra passengers, BNA has increased parking and valet staffing and coordinated with the Department of Public Safety to manage traffic flow around the airport on Sunday.

BNA is urging travelers to use its short-term parking to alleviate congestion. The terminal garages offer free parking for up to 30 minutes and reduced rates after that.

There is also a new free cell phone lot at 1415 Murfreesboro Pike that features digital signs with real-time flight updates. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes to BNA during heavy travel periods, including exit 216A, exit 216B and Murfreesboro Pike.

Travelers can sign up for text alerts for their flights at flynashville.com. Passengers should plan on arriving extra early and giving themselves plenty of time to park, check in and get through security.
