NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Equity Alliance and Black Voters Matter will join Tennessee State University alumni and students for a protest at the Tennessee State Capitol on Thursday as the Tennessee House considers a bill that would remove the school’s Board of Trustees.

The protesters plan to pack the House Chamber gallery prior to the 9 a.m. session and will then hold a press conference and student protest from noon until 1:30 p.m.

The group is also demanding that the state pay the $2.1 billion the federal government says is owed to the university.

The House version of the bill calls for the voting members of the board whose terms expire on June 30, 2025, to be vacated immediately. Gov. Bill Lee would then fill each vacancy.

The Senate bill passed last week calls for all members of the Board of Trustees to be removed and for Lee to appoint 10 new members.
