NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - People from around the state marched to the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion on Saturday to protest the “Arming Teachers” bill.
Gov. Bill Lee signed the legislation into law on Friday.
The bill will require teachers who want to be armed to go through 40 hours of training, a background check and a psychological evaluation. They must also get approval from school leaders and the police.
The governor says schools do not have to let teachers carry, but it is an extra tool for them to help protect their students.
On Saturday, many people continued to voice their opinions about the issue.
One mom participating in the march said she is scared for her daughter to start school.
“This is going to be my daughter’s first year in school. There’s just too many scenarios. It’s just too irresponsible,” the mom said.
Several school districts across Middle Tennessee have said they will not allow teachers to carry guns.
