NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Thursday marks the start of a hunger strike organized by a national organization protesting against state lawmakers passing a bill allowing teachers and other staff members to carry weapons on campus.
Uvalde Foundation For Kids says at least seven of its members will be participating in fasting consisting of no food or drinks as Gov. Bill Lee considers the legislation.
“We’re done talking. We’re done sending letters,” founder Daniel Chapin said. “We’re sending a message to legislators and other districts across this state.”

Earlier this week, House lawmakers joined the Senate in passing a bill which would require educators to undergo training, background checks to carry a weapon on school grounds.
Supporters of the bill say it would benefit students in rural communities that don’t have officers. It’s an intent fueling the organizations desire to see change.
“This will last until we find that we are taking it seriously and that the people that have been voicing their concerns on the steps of the capitol and across Tennessee are heard,” Chapin said.
Governor Lee has 10 days to decide whether to sign or veto a bill once it reaches his office. Lee said Thursday afternoon he planned to sign the bill.
