NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The city of Nashville may be welcoming another professional sports team in the coming years.

During a press conference in Brooklyn, New York, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert confirmed her plans to expand the league from 13 teams to sixteen in the coming years, and revealed Nashville is one of the cities they are considering.

Engelbert was asked by a reporter on Monday about her expansion plans for the league, and if a 14th was in the works:

“Our plan, and goal, is to get to sixteen teams in the next few years,” Engelbert asserted. “So, we’re at 13 with the Golden State team, our plan is to get three more in the next few years. We’re talking to a lot of different cities...I’ll throw some of those out there because I’ve already thrown them out there. We continue to engage with cities like Philadelphia, and Toronto, and Portland, and Denver, and Nashville...and South Florida.”

The WNBA just expanded to thirteen teams with the addition of Golden State, which will begin play during the 2025 season.
