NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - When it came to roads, Thursday was kind of a mess. With so much so much snow on the ground from earlier in the week, there would soon be another challenge on top of that: the icy conditions from the freezing sleet and rain.
What is the biggest difference between sleet and rain? WSMV4′s First Alert Meteorologist Melanie Layden explained the difference by comparing donuts.
Like a glazed donut, freezing rain freezes on contact with a cold surface creating a “glaze” of ice.
With sleet, similar to a sprinkled donut, it can fall like little ice pellets and can bounce off the ground. Sleet can still create an icy mess, but looks more like a sprinkled donut.
