Awards for Indigenous Students

Awarded to an outstanding Indigenous student in demonstrated financial need who is entering a full-time undergraduate degree program in Science at Carleton University. This award may be continued for 3 subsequent years of full-time enrolment provided the recipient remains in good academic standing and continues to demonstrate financial need. This award is valued at $4000. Endowed in 2021 by the Garay family.

Value $5,000. Awarded annually to an Indigenous student in demonstrated financial need who is entering any undergraduate program of study within the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. This bursary may be continued for 3 years of full-time enrollment provided the student remains in good academic standing and continues to demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 2020 through the generosity of Humphrey Law, BComm/57. Revised 2022. Application is required.

Awarded annually to an Indigenous student who is entering any full-time undergraduate program at Carleton University for the first time and who has demonstrated financial need.

Current registered undergraduate students may complete the General Undergraduate Bursary application in order to be considered and assessed for available donor bursary awards. Bursaries may be awarded to students who are in receipt of some type of student loan funding from either government student financial assistance programs (OSAP or other province) or from a financial institution and continue to demonstrate financial need in order to finance their studies. Complete and submit your application by Oct. 31 (late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered).

The Ministry has allocated funding to create the Indigenous Student Bursary to provide direct support to indigenous students with financial need. Indigenous peoples include First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Please note, there are a limited number of these bursaries available.

Eligible students are attending first entry programs of study and must meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirements. If you believe that you may meet the eligibility requirements to be considered for this bursary, but have not been presented with the Indigenous Student Bursary application via Carleton Central, please contact the Awards Office. The application will be available as of Sept. 4. Complete and submit your application by Oct. 31 (late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered).

Gordon Robertson, the former Chancellor and Chancellor Emeritus of Carleton University, established this scholarship to encourage and promote higher rates of postsecondary completion for Inuit students. This scholarship is awarded annually to one or two full-time Inuit students either entering or continuing a program of study at Carleton University.

Established by The Métis Nation of Ontario through the Métis Training Initiatives and awarded on the basis of financial need to registered undergraduate students in any faculty or school at Carleton University who are verified Métis citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario. The value of this bursary will vary based on financial need and availability of funds.

Applicants will be required to consent to a citizenship verification check to confirm eligibility for these awards. To apply for this bursary, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) will provide Carleton University students a letter to verify citizenship. Please include the verification letter with your bursary application.

Eligibility:

• Undergraduate students, enrolled full-time or part-time, who are verified Métis citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO)
• Métis citizenship verification check to confirm eligibility for these awards is required
• Must have demonstrated financial need and must meet OSAP’s Ontario Residency requirements

Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Citizenship Verification:

• Complete the MNO Bursary Citizenship Verification Form by creating an account (This will involve providing key demographic information and consent to have citizenship status checked by the MNO’s 3rd party Registry)
• MNO will provide students at Carleton University with a letter to verify citizenship – Please submit your citizenship confirmation letter with this application.

Awarded annually to undergraduate students in demonstrated financial need who are registered members of a Mohawk territory and are entering or continuing in any full-time program of study at Carleton University.  Preference will be given to registered members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.)  Endowed in 2020, this bursary honors and respects the land, language, and culture of the Mohawk People. Above all, it is a Tribute to our Elders. Revised 2023.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Initiatives in Education, to an Indigenous student in demonstrated financial need who is enrolled in the Indigenous Enriched Support Program. Endowed in 2021 by an anonymous donor.

Awarded annually to an outstanding full-time undergraduate indigenous student who is entering or proceeding from one year to another in any program of study. Preference will be given to a female student. Endowed in 2017 by The Canadian Federation of University Women – Ottawa.

• All undergraduate students who meet the academic and course load requirements for awarding a scholarship and who are proceeding from one year to the next are automatically considered.

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement to an outstanding Indigenous student who has completed the Indigenous Enriched Support Program. Eligible recipients will have fully participated in all aspects of the Indigenous Enriched Support Program and are proceeding into a program of full-time or part-time study at Carleton University during the following academic year. Endowed in 2019 by Catherine Van Loon in memory of her daughter Christine.

Value $1,200 each. Six bursaries awarded annually in the second term, on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement, to deserving students enrolled in the Enriched Support Program (ESP) with a maximum of one recipient in the Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP). Selection will be based on financial need, participation in the program (showing determination), and academic results. Established in 2014 by anonymous donors. Revised 2019, 2022.

Value $5,000. Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the leadership of the Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP), to outstanding Indigenous students who have successfully completed the IESP and are proceeding into a degree program at Carleton University during the following academic year. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and will have fully participated in all aspects of the Indigenous Enriched Support Program. This award may be continued for up to 3 years of full-time enrolment provided the students remain in good academic standing and continue to demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 2021 through the generosity of The Joyce Family Foundation.

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the leadership of the Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP,) to an Indigenous student in demonstrated financial need who is entering the Indigenous Enriched Support Program. Preference will be given to students entering the program from Manitoba. Endowed in 2021 by C. Robert Kelly and family.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean of the Sprott School of Business to an outstanding undergraduate Indigenous student who is enrolled in or has been admitted into the Bachelor of Commerce degree program at Sprott School of Business. Preference will be given to students in the accounting concentration. Application is required. Established in 2022 by KPMG.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Law and Legal Studies to outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students continuing in a degree program within the Department of Law and Legal Studies. Application is required. Endowed 2024 by the Department of Law and Legal Studies to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous students to the project of law and transformation.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the School for Studies in Art and Culture, to one or more outstanding full-time undergraduate students who are entering or proceeding from one year to another in any program of study within the School. Preference will be given to Indigenous students or if no Indigenous students are eligible in the program, then preference will be given to students whose studies focus on Indigenous arts and culture. “Minôjitonigewin” (Min-O-jiton-eh-geh-win) is an expression or explanation for someone doing something skillfully and with good intent, it can be used in crafting, writing and painting – meaning someone has honed a skill. This scholarship will allow students to hone their own skills as they explore their passion for Indigenous arts and culture. Endowed in 2017. Revised 2024.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement to outstanding Indigenous students who have been nominated by their Indigenous student peers. Recipients will have made an exceptional contribution to the Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP), will have completed at least 3.0 credits in the Fall/Winter term, have fully participated in all aspects of the Enriched Support Program and are proceeding into a degree program at Carleton University during the following academic year. Endowed in 2019 by Margaret and Kenneth Torrance.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean of the Sprott School of Business to an outstanding Indigenous student proceeding from one year to another in any program within the Sprott School of Business. Preference will be for students in the Finance concentration. Application is required. Established in 2019 by T.E. Wealth Indigenous Services.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature, to an undergraduate, or graduate student whose area of interest is Indigenous Literature. This award was established in 2001 by family, friends, and colleagues of Wilfred Peltier, Odawa pipecarrier, who passed away in July 2000.  Associated some 20 years with Carleton University, Peltier served as an Elder-in-Residence in the Department of Sociology/Anthropology as well as adviser to the Centre for Aboriginal Education, Research and Culture.

• No application is required for this scholarship. At the end of each academic year, the English Department will nominate or recommend outstanding students as potential recipients.
