The Mackenzie Building honours Chalmers Jack Mackenzie who was Carleton’s second chancellor, president of the National Research Council, first president of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and instrumental in the development of science and engineering education in Canada.

The building contains facilities to support all engineering disciplines. It’s also home to Carleton’s industrial design program.

Accessibility Guide

Parking

5 accessible visitor parking spaces in P2. 3 accessible visitor parking spaces on Library Road near Canal Building. For information on accessible permit parking, visit Parking Services.

Exterior Entrances

5 accessible entrances lead to level 2 (ground-level). The entrance near residences features larger doors and large vestibule. The other 4 accessible entrances are located at links between blocks, closer to the courtyard.

Interior Entrances

Two tunnel entrances to level 1 (basement), but only one is accessible. The entrance from tunnel B (green) is accessible (door opener, elevator), but the entrance from tunnel A (grey) leads to stairs. Links to Minto CASE on levels 2-4, with door openers on levels 2 and 4 only. Bridges on levels 3 (ramp and door opener) and level 4 (door opener) link to Architecture Building.

Elevators

3 elevators. The elevator in the EDC block serves levels 2-4 and features tactile and braille buttons, and an audible announcement system (voice and beeps). The elevator between blocks A and B serves levels 1-4. It features tactile and braille buttons, an audible announcement system (beeps), and a mirror. The smaller elevator in block C serves levels 1-5, and features tactile and braille buttons, and an audible announcement system (beeps). Note: this elevator serves level 1 (tunnel level), but leads to a space without a door opener.

Washrooms

Accessible stalls in multi-stall washrooms on levels 2-4 (door openers). Accessible universal washrooms on levels 2, 3, and 5 (door openers). Washrooms are located near building links in blocks B, C, and D, and in ECD block.

Telephones

Student phones available in rooms 283 and 295. Pay phones at basement level are inaccessible.

Classroom Areas

Laboratories and classrooms are generally accessible but require modified work stations for wheelchair users. Room 230 is inaccessible but can be accessed through room 228. Key can be obtained from the Assistant Dean of Engineering.

Study Areas

There are various accessible resource centres and study areas throughout the building.

Food/Beverages

Closest cafeteria/lounge facilities located in the University Centre.

Existing Obstacles

Exterior entrances are accessible with some form of difficulty; only Block A has ramps (very narrow, complicated further by heavy doors).

Remarks/Hints

Use catwalk structure adjacent to the School of Industrial Design for quick, easy access to the School of Architecture. The catwalk from level 2 in Mackenzie Building (Block A) is accessible to level 4 of the Architecture Building.
