ABOUT ME:

I began lecturing engineering courses at Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal (UL) after obtaining a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Management Systems Engineering concentration (VA Tech, 1990). Entered academia after more than 15 years of experience in software and Information Systems, having filled engineering and managerial positions in the civil service and in manufacturing and service companies.

At UL, I pioneered multidisciplinary senior design projects and introduced a senior and graduate Technology Transfer course, where engineering students had to design a system to take an innovation to the market as a successful product. I lectured courses on Management for Engineers, Professionalism and Ethics, Operations Management, Simulation, Project Management, and Engineering Risk Management.

I was also part of the team that launched the MBA program at Catholic University of Lisbon and was a visiting faculty at the University of Texas in Austin’s Business School and at Virginia Tech's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. My research interests are the application of Systems Engineering principles and techniques to design solutions and policies for socio-technical organizational problems.
