WHERE TO WATCH ICYMI – Watch last week’s episode.
Defective – Blanket Warnings Part 1: Parents say the organization that helps set regulations for thousands of products, including baby items, sometimes considers profit over safety because manufacturers have too much influence. We investigate the relationship between the federal government and the organization tasked with setting industry standards – and who’s in charge of those deciding committees. As the organization explores possible regulations for baby sleepwear, a company founder is heading up those standard-setting meetings while simultaneously lawyering up to sue the government for issuing warnings.
Defective – Blanket Warnings Part 2: We investigate how standard-setting committees are assessing potential dangers with children’s products by picking through death/injury data and deciding which cases should count in the discussion. We get an inside look at the process, speak to a mother who says she had to fight to get her daughter’s death to count and look into concerns that there’s a repeating pattern with notifying the public about potential safety issues with infant products.
Exploding Ovens: The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received hundreds of reports of glass oven doors exploding without warning. The majority of modern ovens use tempered glass, which is manufactured in extremely high temperatures and then rapidly cooled – a process that makes it four times stronger than regular glass. However, tempered glass can still shatter, and when it does it tends to do so suddenly and violently. Susan Campbell in Arizona examines what’s causing glass doors to shatter and why they can be even more frustrating to fix.
