UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award

The UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award is available to students who are former BC youth in care, as defined by the Child, Family and Community Service Act.

  • The award covers tuition costs and mandatory fees for the terms required for completion of a student's first undergraduate degree.
    • Note: Funding can not be applied to courses offered by UVic's Division of Continuing Studies.
  • Eligible applicants may also receive funding to assist with the costs of books, supplies and living expenses.

Eligibility requirements

To receive funding, you must:

  • have received care in the Province of British Columbia through the Child, Family and Community Service Act for a minimum of 12 months (consecutive or accumulated) in any, or a combination of, the categories as outlined in the consent form
  • have received any of the care statuses outlined in the consent form at the time you turn (or turned) 19, regardless of your time in care
  • be admitted to the University of Victoria for the upcoming term of study and registered in your first undergraduate degree program
  • Be registered in and maintain enrolment in full-time studies, 60% of a full-time course load per term (4.5 units per term, 3.0 units per term for students with a permanent disability)
  • Have a sessional grade point average of at least 2.0 in the previous two terms
  • Demonstrate financial need.

If you're not sure if you meet the criteria, contact your former social worker, any Ministry of Children and Family Development office or any delegated Aboriginal agency for clarification.

How to apply

Submit your application to Student Awards and Financial Aid.

  1. Review the eligibility requirements.
  2. Download and complete the UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award Application.
  3. Email your application form to finaidofficer2@uvic.ca.

Approvals can take from 1-4 weeks, depending on the volume of applications.

Receiving your funding

Student Awards and Financial Aid will contact you by email to confirm your acceptance. They'll also provide instructions for you to submit a budget outlining your expenses for the academic term.

  • To continue receiving funding, you must submit a new budget at the start of every academic term.
  • If you're also receiving the BC Provincial Tuition Waiver, funding from the UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award will be provided to you by direct deposit or cheque.

If you take a break from your studies, you don't need to reapply for the Tuition Waiver when you return to UVic. However, you must meet the requirements for full-time registration and grade point average to continue receiving funding.

Students who apply for the UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award can also apply for the BC Provincial Tuition Waiver and Learning for Future Grant administered by StudentAid BC.

UVic bursaries

If you're approved for the UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award, you'll automatically be considered for the following bursaries:

  • Sisters of St Ann University Support Award
  • Mischa Weisz Foundation Cost of Living Award
  • Youth in Care Living Expenses Award
  • Youth Futures Education Fund
