About mechanical engineering

Like every field of engineering, mechanical engineering applies the discoveries of science to the design and creation of things that are safe, reliable and practical.

Mechanical engineers direct their efforts towards the creation of physical or mechanical things, whether single components, complete machines, or complex processes.

Mechanical engineering rests on some basic principles:

  • the effects of forces and energy on solids and liquids
  • the properties of materials
  • the design of mechanisms and manufacturing processes
  • the integration of mechanical, electronic and computer systems

With today's technology and tools, mechanical engineers can apply these fundamentals to create a stunning variety of cutting-edge products. Mechanical engineering is a broad, diversified and well-established discipline, with career opportunities in almost any field.

Inspired teaching in small classes

Don't be just a number. Our class sizes are smaller than at many other universities. You'll develop real relationships with your professors and classmates, and get the support and recognition that make the difference.

Real life learning through co-op

At UVic, learning extends beyond the classroom. Through co-operative education (co-op), you can alternate terms in class with paid work terms in positions related to your field of study. You'll graduate with work experience, a great resume, contacts in your field and some extra cash in your pocket. Co-op graduates are more likely to find relevant, permanent work with higher salaries.

As a mechanical engineering student, your degree program includes an integrated co-operative education (co-op) component. You’ll automatically be registered in co-op and receive job search guidance and training by the co-op team. Learn more about co-op in the Faculty of Engineering.
