Sarah Hood, Director, Organization Development and Learning Services (she/her)
As an uninvited settler on W̱SÁNEĆ territory I am grateful to live on these lands and acknowledge my privilege in calling this place home. My family came to Canada from England when I was a child, and I grew up on the unceded territories of the səl̓ilwətaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsleil-Waututh), Skwxwú7mesh-ulh Temíx̱w (Squamish), and šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmaɁɬ təməxʷ (Musqueam) peoples which I called Vancouver and North Vancouver. My family history includes Welsh, Irish, English and Spanish ancestry. The work I do for UVic is called Organization Development, and I bring to this work a history of facilitation, teaching, leadership development, coaching and Human Resources experience. My formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce, an MA in Leadership and Training, Certification as an Executive Coach (CEC) and a Certified Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation. My role in the Human Resources department is to ensure UVic leaders and employees have the training, tools and support they need to contribute to university priorities. This work involves creating learning opportunities and programming that help people and teams realize change that is necessary and often uncomfortable.

Karissa has been working, playing and living on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people since 2010 and has been part of the UVic community since 2012. She draws on the wisdom of her teachers, colleagues and coaches in the fields of Mental Health, Restorative Justice, Cultural Intelligence, Leadership Development and Adult Learning theory as she consults with leaders and works with teams to process, discuss and find ways forward through workplace and relational conflict and difficulty. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, educator, facilitator and improvisor, Karissa works together with her colleagues to design and deliver generative team, large group and learning experiences that build trust, increase engagement, explore resilience and strengthen communication from practical, research-supported, trauma-informed and strengths-based lenses of learning and dialogue. Orvis Starkweather, People and Equity Analytics Advisor (they/them)
Orvis has been a grateful guest on the territories of the Esquimalt, Songhees and WSÁNEĆ peoples for the last 4 years. They are descended from Irish, English, Scottish and German people that settled around the Great Lakes and grew up in Toronto. Like many trans people, Orvis has lived experience with how data can lead to erasure and harm and use this passion to guide their work. Orvis uses equity-centered analytics to provide advice, guidance and consultation to improve people-related decisions and advance UVic’s priorities. They also contribute to the renewal of Human Resources data systems and processes to address systemic barriers in areas such as policy, practice, culture and organizational climate. When not nerding out about data, Orvis sews button-up shirts, picks fruit, and plays table top role playing games.

Orvis uses equity-centered analytics to provide advice, guidance and consultation to improve people-related decisions and advance UVic’s priorities. They also contribute to the renewal of Human Resources data systems and processes to address systemic barriers in areas such as policy, practice, culture and organizational climate.

Karissa Sovdi, Associate Director, Organization Development and Learning Services (she/her)
Karissa has been working, playing and living on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people since 2010 and has been part of the UVic community since 2012. Alongside these consulting and facilitation services, Karissa is focused on programs that cultivate meaningful employee recognition and connection, and foster conflict fluency across the organization.
