Opportunities within the Office of Student Life

Student Life Mentors

The Student Life Mentor (SLM) role is dedicated to creating supportive spaces, programming and engaging UVic students in matters most important to them. This role is an exciting paid opportunity for anyone who is interested in engaging UVic students in conversations about campus resources, services, and to act as a guide for navigating the campus community. Student Life Mentors act as peer leaders in fostering relationships and community for all UVic students, mentoring student engagement and growth.

To apply: We are hiring! Visit the Student Life Mentor page for more information.

Practicum/co-op opportunities

We often accept practicum or co-op students to work in our office. Former students have worked on projects involving curriculum development, program assessment, event planning and more. Co-op opportunities can often be found on Learning in Motion. If you’re interested in a practicum or co-op opportunity with our team, to explore your options.

Nourish + Flourish

Nourish + Flourish offers a space for students to come together, experience authentic connections with one another, pause, reflect, and discuss topics that connect us. An important part of building community is breaking bread together, so the discussion happens while enjoying a locally prepared meal.

Through this program, we hope to de-centre the individual in leadership and instead focus on cultivating leadership through the values of care, curiosity, and respect that bring us together as a strong interdependent community.

To register: Visit the Nourish + Flourish page.

Student Life Grant

The Office of Student Life administers the UVic Student Life Grant, which funds current undergraduate and graduate student-led initiatives (up to $1,500 per applicant) that engage and positively impact the UVic campus community. Students can apply for one of the following funding streams: Anti-racism initiatives or Community engagement initiatives.

To apply: There are 5 application deadlines per year. The application form, deadlines and further information is available on the OSL website.

Work-study students

We often hire students for part-time positions September to April through the work-study program. These students help with a variety of projects in our office. In the past, these positions have often involved communications and engagement work. Students must be work-study eligible in order to apply for these positions.

The positions are paid work opportunities (typically $20/hour); hours vary by position.

To apply: Work-study positions are typically posted on the work-study website in early September.

Hiring panel student volunteers

The Office of Student Life (OSL) is looking for student volunteers to take part in upcoming OSL hiring panels/search committees for professional staff positions in our office. This is a great way to gain knowledge and experience of a hiring process, and to bring student perspective to staffing decisions at UVic.

A $400 honorarium will be offered to students who participate on OSL hiring panels.

To apply: Read the hiring panel student call out and apply on the Student Life Opportunities form.
