NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - One person was injured after a shooting outside the WeGo transit center Friday morning near downtown Nashville.

The incident happened less than 24 hours after WeGo held a news conference to emphasize the safety of its buses and facilities.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, gunfire was reported near the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center on Dr. M.L.K. Jr. Blvd. around 6:20 a.m. Officers quickly responded to the station and discovered the shooting occurred outside the transit center, near the staircase on 4th Avenue North and James Robertson Pkwy.

MNPD said 19-year-old Dejuan Prime and another 20-year-old man were involved in an argument when Prime shot the man multiple times.

The victim told police he was walking at the bus station and noticed Prime staring at him. He said the teen began following and threatening him — eventually, he told Prime to get away. The victim said he threw a cup of coffee at him and ran away; Prime allegedly followed, caught up to him and shot him.

Officers apprehended Prime shortly after arriving at the scene. He is being charged with attempted criminal homicide and using a gun in the commission of a dangerous felony.

“I can’t believe that. I can’t believe that there’s people down there right now just sitting where there was a shooting this morning,” Isaac Brown, who rides WeGo regularly, said. “I don’t feel unsafe at the bus stop, mainly because there’s a lot of people here.”

WeGo released the following statement on the incident:

“We appreciate that MNPD has an enhanced police presence in that area of downtown. We will continue to work closely with them and assist however needed.”

The shooting and subsequent investigation did not affect the normal bus schedule as WeGo buses continued to operate throughout the morning.

“The MNPD continues to operate initiatives, both overt and covert, in the 400 block of Dr. Martin L. King Boulevard and 4th Avenue North to enhance community safety,” police said.
