Metro Council passes resolution to honor Covenant shooting victims on eve of anniversary
Six people – three students and three staff members – were shot and killed at the school on March 27, 2023.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Metro Council passed a resolution to honor the victims in The Covenant School shooting and first responders just over a week before the one-year anniversary.
Six people – 9-year-old students Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Halley Scruggs, school custodian Mike Hill, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak and Head of School Katherine Koonce – lost their lives in the shooting on March 27, 2023. The resolution also praised the Metro Nashville Police Department and Nashville Fire Department for its response to the school.
The Council passed the resolution sponsored by Sandy Ewing and others unanimously.
Several Council members who spoke in support of the resolution called for gun control to prevent this from ever happening again, saying they’re going to do everything they can to create change. They also said state leaders need to act.
“I find myself amazed that we arrive at this space again and again and again, where we are talking about the deaths of children in schools,” Council Member Jacob Kupin said. “I’m shocked that we have not done more to change this. I mean, how can we watch children die and do nothing?”
