NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate crashed into two other vehicles, forcing the Metro Nashville Police Department to close all eastbound lanes heading into Wilson County early Thursday morning.

The crash occurred on I-40 East between Stewarts Ferry Pike and Old Hickory Blvd. around 2:30 a.m. MNPD said the driver entered I-40 going west in eastbound lanes of travel before the incident.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported all eastbound lanes were blocked for the crash and traffic was diverted off the interstate at Old Hickory Blvd.

Police said three vehicles were involved in the crash and one person was seriously injured requiring transport to the hospital.

Heavy rain fell in the area overnight and continued into the morning, but it is unclear if weather was a factor in the crash. Signs of impairment were found at the scene, according to MNPD.
