(CNN) - Gas and propane stoves may be hazardous to your health, according to research published Friday in the journal Science.

According to the authors, gas stoves produce unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide, which poses a potential health risk.

Researchers say people get 75% of their yearly limit for nitrogen dioxide from a gas stove.

Meanwhile, electric stoves do not produce nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Health officials say breathing air with high levels of nitrogen dioxide can cause respiratory problems, including asthma.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says nearly 50 million households have gas or propane stoves.
