NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Spring Fling gets underway this week, which marks the state championships for high school spring sports in Tennessee.

The boys’ soccer team at Father Ryan High School reached the final four, and their coach, Robin Dieterich, is retiring after 46 years in the game.

During his tenure, Dieterich has won 10 state titles with the Irish - five with the boys’ team, and five with the girls’ team.

“It’s just been incredible, surreal, that 46 years later, I’m looking back and saying, ‘Hey, this was quite a run.’” Dieterich admits. “It wasn’t just the state championship and the ring that they got, but all the memories in that year.”

Without question, the players respect Dieterich’s accomplishments and the lessons he’s taught them.

“It’s more just the work ethic he’s built in, showing up every day, on time,” explains team captain, Seamus Slattery. “Being there, putting in your best effort every single day. I think that’s something I’ll probably take with me.”

Senior Peter Texter would like to send his coach off with another championship.

“It’s been a while since we’ve won state,” Texter said. “It’s what we’ve been working for these past four years and especially this year. With it being our last year, and Coach’s last year, it’d be a perfect way to end the season.”

Father Ryan lost to Christian Brothers on Wednesday, ending their season one win short of the title game.

Dieterich began coaching at Father Ryan in 1979. He was inducted into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Hall of Fame in 2018.
