Using AI for Your Job Search

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human cognitive abilities. As AI becomes more popular, we are seeing increased usage of AI models, such as ChatGPT, in students’ career exploration and job search processes.

Although AI can be a powerful tool, it has limitations. Due to this, understanding the appropriate and inappropriate use of tools such as ChatGPT is essential.

Appropriate Use Inappropriate Use ChatGPT Limitations Asking questions relating to career paths Relying on ChatGPT to make important decisions or conduct all aspects of a job search Generates words based on input Identifying keywords and themes from a job posting to help tailor your application Relying on AI to write your entire resume and cover letter Guesses answers; delivers plausible but sometimes incorrect information Identifying new job titles you have not explored to assist navigating online job boards Using AI to apply to jobs on your behalf without reviewing the job description and qualifications Creates general information for your resume and cover letter that may not accurately reflect your own experiences Identifying questions to ask during information interviews Relying on ChatGPT to respond to all communications from professionals Employers could potentially flag your application if they suspect AI was used Limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021
