Welcome to St Chad’s

St Chad’s is one of the oldest colleges in Durham, situated in one of the city’s most stunning locations. Established in 1904 as an Anglican foundation, and aiming to live out its Christian ethos with integrity and imagination in the 21st century, Chad’s today welcomes students of all faiths and beliefs to study for the whole range of Durham University degrees.  We especially welcome students from under-represented backgrounds and have a wide range of scholarships, bursaries and financial support to help you make the most of your time as a Chad’s student.  With over 450 undergraduate and around 150 postgraduate students, we are a hospitable, human-sized community with an excellent reputation as a college where students will be both challenged and supported.

We currently have a mini exhibition in the display We currently have a mini exhibition in the display cabinet in the College entrance hall. It is a celebration of Ruth First, an anti-apartheid campaigner who taught in the Sociology Department here in Durham from 1973 - 1982. In 1982, when she was in Mozambique, Ruth was killed by a parcel bomb, an assassination carried out by the South African secret police. Her legacy lives on in many ways, including in Durham’s Ruth First Scholarship. This is a scholarship, partially supported by St Chad’s College, which brings a student from southern Africa to Durham each year to do a Master’s degree. This year’s Ruth First Scholar is Scholastic Mpofu who is pursuing a masters degree in Civil Engineering, pictured here beside the exhibition cabinet after a formal dinner this week, attended by a number of SCR members who also serve on the Ruth First Educational Trust Committee.
The exhibition will be with us for a few weeks. Do take the chance to find out more about this remarkable woman.
