Arizona National Golf Club: A Robert Trent Jones Jr. gem in the desert foothills of Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona National Golf Club is a semi-private daily-fee golf course in Tucson and also plays host to the University of Arizona Wildcats golf team. Winding up and down the Catalina foothills, the course opened in 1995 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Originally named the Raven at Sabino Springs, Arizona National G.C. features many natural springs throughout the development, which makes this part of the desert foothills particularly lush with plant and wildlife. The golf course plays under 6,800 yards from the championship tees, but it's target-style nature on most holes helps keep the course a relevant test even for today's top collegiate players.

Perhaps the no. 1 way you can tell the golf course was built pre "Tiger Era" is the two par 5s that play steeply downhill from elevated tee shots, No. 5 and No. 18, and are just over 500 yards. For college golfers today, they're mere driver-short irons into the green. The par-5 11th hole is a different story, featuring a blind tee shot, elevated green and 625 yards in between.
