What goes down must come up at SunRidge Canyon Golf Club near Scottsdale

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- One of the Valley's top golf courses is SunRidge Canyon Golf Club, located just east of Scottsdale in Fountain Hills.

SunRidge Canyon opened in 1995 as a high-profile desert golf club near Scottsdale. It's flown under the radar in recent years until 2010, when new local ownership purchased the club and began upgrading the facility. One of the new enhancements was the addition of a Jim McLean Golf School, his only school in Arizona.

The Keith Foster design is a par 71 and plays 6,823 yards from the championship tees. The most interesting trait about the golf course is the routing, which begins from a high point and slowly creeps downhill on the outward nine. The ninth hole is the furthest point of the golf course, and the inward nine begins creeping back up the mountainside. The result is a finishing stretch that can play very challenging, especially the long, par-4 closing hole. There are a few breathers on the back that don't play uphill, including both par 3s, the 14th and 17th, that both rival each other for most picturesque hole on the golf course.

SunRidge Canyon Golf Club's beautiful layout winds among the foothills the McDowell Mountains. Nestled between the canyon walls, it at times seems like the missing piece to a beautiful golf course puzzle that evolved over millions of years in the Sonoran Desert.
