The Monument Course at Troon North Golf Club: A top Scottsdale-area gem

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Troon North Monument Course makes up one half of the Troon North Golf Club, also home to the Pinnacle Course.

Located in the northeast valley in Scottsdale, Troon North stands out as one of the Southwest's top public golf facilities, set amongst some of the Sonoran Desert's most spectacular scenery, including Pinnacle Peak, visible from many spots on both courses. Other boulder piles and desert formations make a round on the Monument always interesting. One such natural wonder is a large boulder from which the course takes its namesake: the giant boulder that sits in the middle of the par-5 third's fairway.

The Monument debuted in 1990, while the Pinnacle came along later in 1995. The courses have been altered since their respective debuts, however. A redesign and re-routing swapped certain holes out with one another. With a couple exceptions, today's Monument configuration is made up of the original front nine's of each golf course. The end result are two more walker-friendly golf courses, though it's tough to identify which golf course is the better of the two: both have tournament-worthy championship tee length playing more than 7,000 yards with tremendous hole variety. They also feature wider playing corridors through desert than most modern desert courses.

The Monument features rolling fairways with virtually no rough except around the greens. The 18th hole, named "St. Andrews," is a large, false front that defends the green ala the Old Course's "Valley of Sin."

Further adding to the experience at Troon North is a great driving range and practice area, plus a bar, restaurant, full locker rooms, as well as the options for forecaddies to assist with foursomes' rounds.

Troon North Golf Club - Monument Course

The Monument course is widely considered Troon North’s signature course, a 7,039-yard test that winds through desert replete with arroyos, natural washes, huge saguaros, mesquite and ironweed. The fairways are lush and well-maintained, and the greens are large and tricky. Many tees are set like pedestals perched above the fairways.
