API Galaxies et Grandes Structures
Diverses équipes de l’Observatoire travaillent sur tout ou partie du continuum allant de la formation des grandes structures de l’Univers à la structure de notre propre Galaxie. Les modèles théoriques, simulations numériques et observations s’attèlent à déterminer les conditions dans lesquelles la formation des galaxies s’est faite et la physique en jeu dans leur évolution des hauts redshifts aux bas redshifts. Le modèle cosmologique standard, dans lequel les structures se forment et évoluent dans une compétition entre l’expansion de l’Univers et la gravitation, inclut un secteur sombre, matière noire et énergie noire, qui fait l’objet de nombreux travaux au sein de l’établissement. Les objectifs de ces travaux sont de caractériser ces éléments par des prédictions théoriques et des contraintes observationnelles, des grandes structures aux galaxies individuelles : on compare par exemple des prédictions provenant de divers modèles d’énergie noire aux observations des grandes structures (par exemple par Euclid) ou, à plus petite échelle, on teste l’influence de la matière noire, standard ou non, sur la dynamique de galaxies individuelles. La formation des premières galaxies est étudiée par des investigations sur l’époque charnière de la réionisation de l’Univers, notamment par des simulations numériques qui seront comparées aux observations à venir (par le radio-télescope SKA), par la détermination des propriétés des galaxies à haut redshift observées par les grands télescopes en optique et infrarouge (VLT, ELT, JWST,…) et par l’utilisation de sondes astrophysiques telles que les gamma-ray bursts (notamment ceux qui seront détectés par le futur satellite SVOM). La physique baryonique, notamment aux échelles des galaxies ou amas de galaxies, fait l’objet de nombreuses investigations : on essaie de mieux caractériser la formation d’étoiles dans les galaxies et de déterminer quels sont les facteurs la favorisant ou la freinant, de comprendre les mécanismes en jeu dans le cœur des galaxies, hébergeant des noyaux actifs (à noter que l’étude du trou noir central de la Voie Lactée par GRAVITY devrait nous éclairer sur ce point), ou encore de quantifier les mécanismes d’accrétion et de perte de gaz par les galaxies (par ex. par les observations IRAM, ALMA, JWST). Ces travaux à différentes échelles et différents redshifts s’informent les uns les autres : l’étude du contenu et des mécanismes d’évolution des galaxies à haut redshift éclaire par exemple les observations des galaxies proches, et l’étude de phénomènes dynamiques au sein de la Voie Lactée peut contraindre les paramètres de modèles cosmologiques.
Cette action pluriannuelle incitative vise ainsi à encourager ou initier la construction de projets scientifiques bénéficiant de la mise en commun d’expertises thématiques (concernant les sujets précédemment cités) et méthodologiques : instrumentation (par ex. développement du spectrographe MOSAIC), observations (multi-longueurs d’onde), théorie (développement de modèles analytiques), simulations numériques (à diverses échelles), traitement de grands volumes de données (par ex. par les techniques d’apprentissage machine).
