Indigenous students

student in front of school

The  lək̓ʷəŋən Elders of this area share with us teachings of “New’ews sn ɁeyɁ šweleqwǝns” (“bring in your good feelings”) and “Nǝcǝ māt gwens čey’i” (“work together”). We invite you to consider these teachings as you explore your future at UVic.

Programs

Many of our Indigenous-focused programs and courses are open to all students. Explore Indigenous history, languages and culture. Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in a diverse and inclusive society.

Why self-identify?

We offer services, scholarships and bursaries for Indigenous students. Be sure to self-identify during the admission process so we can share news, services and upcoming events with you.

Academic & cultural programs

We offer services to Indigenous students at all points along their academic journey.

Alternate admissions

If you don't qualify under other admission categories, we will still consider your application in the Special Access – First Nations, Metis and Inuit category. We'll consider how both your education and non-educational achievements indicate your ability to succeed at university.

Reach out to our Indigenous recruiters to ask questions, discuss your candidacy and learn how to apply.

Indigenous housing program

Each academic year, we offer a number of guaranteed spots in on-campus housing for eligible Indigenous students.

If you're interested, complete an online application for residence (single student housing) or family housing. Then email resadmin@uvic.ca with your full name, UVic student ID V# and indicate your interest in the Indigenous housing program.

To learn more about this program contact Allegra Sobotkiewicz at allegra@uvic.ca or 250-721-8404.

Front of First Peoples House

First Peoples House

The First Peoples House is a home-away-from-home for Indigenous students. Drop by to study, meet with an Elder, grab a snack or make new friends. It's a great place to grow in your culture and connect to the local land, learning about others through good discussion in a relaxing and calming space.

Financial aid

There are several scholarships and awards for Indigenous students. You may need to apply for some of these so be sure to read the instructions carefully.

Indigenous Nation funding

Some bands and nations have funding to support your education. We'll help you through this process.

Create your custom viewbook

Build a personalized, online viewbook that focuses on the programs, services and other parts of UVic life you want to learn about. You can read it whenever you want, and edit it if your interests change.
